Birth rate, crude

Definition of Indicator

Number of all live births in a given year per mean population in a the same year. Usually multiplied by 1000.


Calculation (numerator, denominator)

WHO, OECD, Eurostat:

Number of all live births in a given year per 1000 persons (mid-year population)


Additional underlying concepts

Instead of mean population also number of person-years lived by the population in the same period can be used as the denominator.


Relevant dimensions (subgroups)

Country (also region), calendar year.


Preferred data sources

Eurostat, WHO, OECD, based on national routine statistics.


Rationale

Basic demographic data. An indicator needed for calculating population growth (together with Crude mortality rate).


Data availability, quality and periodicity

Eurostat, WHO, OECD: Available for all MSs.
