Population projections baseline variant - 1st January population. Population divided into age groups covering intervals of 1 year and a group of all ages. Projections beginning with 1995 and then every fifth year. Projections are based on assumptions on total fertility rate, life expectancy and migration.
Basic demographic data by itself: population projections are predictive measures which implicate that if the hypothetical projection calculation premises are correct, what projected population size and age structure would result in any future year. They are prerequisite for health care planning and predicting future health care costs, distribution etc..
Eurostat calculates projections for all MSs. Population data from Eurostat projections are available by single age and sex from 2008 (start population) to 2061 (new set of projections EUROPOP2008).
Eurostat projections may differ from national estimates due to different assumptions of fertility, mortality and migration. However, Eurostat projections are recommended because Eurostat uses the same harmonized calculation methods for all countries.
