Psychological well-being (June 2008 addition)

Definition of indicator

Occurrence and extent of psychological well-being during past month, measured by the Energy and Vitality Index (EVI) scale of the RAND Short Form 36. Perceived experience of energy and vitality is an important indicator of psychological well-being and positive mental health. However, cultural variations in experiencing and expressing the inner feelings and emotions have to taken into account when interpreting the results.

Calculation (numerator, denominator)

(1) Recommendation by Mindful/Working Party Mental Health: a mean score of 62 or less on the Energy and Vitality Index (EVI) score (from the RAND Short Form 36 (SF-36 v1.0) questionnaire) is taken to indicate Psychological well-being. Energy and Vitality Index score is based on the following four questions: How much time during the past month?

1. Did you feel full of life?

2. Did you have lots of energy?

3. Did you feel worn out?

4. Did you feel tired?

The six response categories are: 1. All of the time; 2. Most of the time; 3. A good bit of the time; 4. Some of the time; 5. A little of the time; 6. None of the time.

The score for the MHI-5 is computed by adding the scores of each question item and then transforming the raw scores to a 0–100-point scale.

(2) An index or a score indicating psychological well-being, derived from the EHIS questions

SF.2-SF.10: How much of the time, during the past 4 weeks…

SF.2 Did you feel full of life?

SF.6 Did you have a lot of energy?

SF.8 Did you feel worn out?

SF.10 Did you feel tired?

The five response categories are: 1. All of the time; 2. Most of the time; 3. Some of the time;

4. A little of the time; 5. None of the time;

The precise operationlisation to be defined later.

Additional underlying concepts

The Energy and vitality index (EVI) has a score of 0 to 100, where a score of 100 represents optimal mental health. Suggested population norm for the mean score is 70 and 62 for the cutpoint (MINDFUL).

The EVI is one of the eight scales that constitute the SF-36.

The new release of SF-36v2 (and EVI) differs slightly from the version 1.0

Special Eurobarometer survey 248 on Mental Well-Being, question QA5 differs from the definition given above (wording of the questions, 5 response categories). The same is the case with EHIS (questions SF.2-SF.10).

Preferred data sources

(2) EHIS

(3) Eurobarometer, (latest; Special Eurobarometer survey 248 on Mental Well-being, from 1 December 2005 – January 2006).

Rationale

Psychological well-being is an important indicator of positive mental health and thus one of the core indicators to cover the mental health issue. Psychological well-being is linked to better general and mental health. Promotion and prevention activities may increase the level of well-being.

Data availability, quality and periodicity

- Eurobarometer 58.2, 2002 and national surveys 2001-2004 for 12 MSs (WP Mental Health; MINDFUL). Eurobarometer 248, 2005/6: available for all 25 MSs. Eurobarometers are not the optimal source of information, because due to their small sample size, it is not possible to present reliable figures by gender and age.

- EHIS implemented 2007-2009, but Eurostat considers revising this indicator.

Work to do

  • Existence of validated translations of the latest version of SF-36 questionnaire ?
  • Will there be major changes in the domain of mental health by the next EHIS?
