Calculation (numerator, denominator)

Topic needs further developing.

Project musculoskeletal disorders recommendation: 1. Relevant dimensions (subgroups)

Country (also region), calendar year, gender, age group.

Preferred data sources

HIS

Rationale

High-burden health problem. Musculoskeletal conditions (MSC) are a heterogeneous group of well-defined diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, as well as more unspecific conditions like chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain and low back pain. The conditions are rarely life threatening, but the major cause of sickness absence and disability pension. Prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of persons with MSC are often insufficient.

Data availability, quality and periodicity

Data on general musculoskeletal pain is not currently available from international databases. Survey instrument proposed by project musculoskeletal disorders, but is there any data?

EHIS has no question on musculoskeletal pain, just a general question on any physical pain or discomfort (SF.1).

National HIS has a question on musculoskeletal pain at least in: UK (1993, 97), DK (1994), NO (1998), FR (1998, 99), SE (2002), EE (2004).

Representativeness of the surveys are not always optimal due to the lack of the institutionalized population.

Work to do

  • Needs much further development !
  • Definition, calculation, source to be developed
  • Can this indicator really be implemented in MSs? Suggestion: If not EHIS, unlikely feasible
  • Has the recommended question been used in (m)any survey(s)? Is there comparable data available?
  • Should definitons of musculoskeletal and pain be included?
