Self-reported chronic morbidity

Definition of indicator

Self-reported chronic morbidity includes longstanding illnesses and longstanding health problems that are declared by the persons themselves. Only problems of ill-health, but not solely diseases are considered.

Calculation (numerator, denominator)

Proportion of persons who answer positively to the question on whether they have any longstanding chronic illness using EHIS question HS.2:

HS.2: Do you have any longstanding illness or [longstanding] health problem?

[By longstanding I mean illnesses or health problems which have lasted, or are expected to last, for 6 months or more] (Yes / No)

What is put in brackets [ ] can be added in some languages if it is felt that this addition is necessary.

Additional underlying concepts

Longstanding illnesses or health problems should have lasted or are expected to last for 6 months or more. The basic EHIS-question does not specify this reference time period. According to a footnote in the EHIS questionnaire this information may be added in some languages, either as an extension of the question (see above), or as an instruction for interviewers.

The indicator measures if people have a condition, not necessarily if they really “suffer from it”. Also conditions that are not diagnosed by a doctor are included.

The analysis will be limited to the age group 15+; it is the usual age category proposed in the framework of the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS).

Self reported chronic morbidity is not based on a question assessing whether the respondent has any of the diseases/conditions mentioned in a list of chronic diseases presented to the respondent..

Relevant dimensions (subgroups)

Country, year, gender, age group, SES, region.

Preferred data sources

1) in future: national components of the EHIS (question HS.2)

2) currently: EU-SILC

3) currently, alternative: National HIS

Rationale

Widely used measure of general health.

Data availability, quality and periodicity

- Availability: Eurostat, regularly updated based on national health survey data. But the data come however from non-harmonised national HIS, collected in different years depending on the country, going from 1996 to 2003. There is no fixed periodicity in these health interview surveys. From 2004/2005 onwards EU-SILC. From 2007/08 onwards EHIS.

- Representativeness of the surveys is not always optimal due to the exclusion of the institutionalised population.

- EHIS implemented 2007-2009. Data will thus be available in the coming years (and will be pooled by Eurostat).

Work to do

Name changed from “Prevalence of any chronic illness” to “ (Prevalence) of Selfreported chronic morbidity”, as suggested to be done by PK.
