Cancer incidence (all cancers plus nine specified cancers) Total cancer incidence and incidence of the most important cancers, per 100.000 population, in a given year. |
![]() |
Calculation (numerator, denominator) Number of patients with newly diagnosed cancer during the given calendar year divided by person-years at risk (specific per sex, geographical area, period and age group), expressed as per 100.000 population. The 10 categories to be included are (ICD-10): 1) all cancers combined without nonmelanoma skin (C00-C97), 2) trachea, bronchus or lung (C33-34), 3) breast (C50), 4) colorectal (C18-C21), 5) prostate (C61) , 6) stomach, 7) melanoma, 8) cervical (C53), 9) leukemias/lymphomas, 10) all childhood cancers (0-14). |

Relevant dimensions (subgroups) Country (also region), calendar year, age group, sex (except for cervix and prostate cancer). |

- Original data provided by national Cancer Registries (population based or regional/locall). Cancer Registries publish incidence data with a delay of 2-5 years. - Secondary data sources are Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5C), EUCAN (1998) and GLOBOCAN (2000 and 2002) databases (International Agency on Research on Cancer; www-dep.iarc.fr) - Eurostat, WHO or OECD all derive their figures from EUCAN and GLOBOCAN |

Cancer is one of the most important causes of death and it is related to a high disease burden in Europe and there are (often) prevention possibilities. Therefore cancer monitoring is an important Public Health issue. |

Data availability, quality and periodicity - Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5C; VIIIth edition): data for 29 European countries. Population based data for Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, (Ireland), Malta, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden. - EUCAN database (version 5, 1998) with estimates (last available incidence year: 1998) for the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom. - GLOBOCAN (2000 and 2002) for ? - In some MSs Cancer Registry covers the entire population, in others one ore more Cancer Registries cover a fraction of the population. The European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR) and the International Agency on Research on Cancer (IARC) produces cancer incidence estimates at national level, where missing, by mathematical models. |
